DescriptionThe series consists of personal sketchbooks created by Scharf during his lifetime.

The sketchbooks contain drawings, sketches and watercolours of the following:

-art collections
-architecture
-landscapes
-archeological sites
-scenes of everyday life
-social events in which he participated (feasts, funerals etc)
-portraits of various persons, including Scharf's friends
-studies of the human body, plants and animals


The series is divided into three sub-series:

- sketchbooks made during travels with Sir Charles Fellows to Asia Minor.

- Scharf's sketchbooks (SSB) containing sketchbooks reflecting his personal interests, researches and projects he took on as well as those made during his private expeditions to various country houses, museums and places in the United Kingdom.

-two volumes of notebooks containing sketches of sunsets, Windsor miniatures and views of Margate.

Please note that there are also typed indexes of portraits to Scharf's sketchbooks (SSB) and copies of the catalogues can be found in the National Portrait Gallery Library.

Sketchbooks in the sub-series are arranged chronologically.
