DescriptionThe series consists of records accumulated during the course of research undertaken privately by Scharf and related to his own personal interests. Much of the research culminated in lectures or publications. Most of the lectures were given to the Society of Antiquaries (of which Scharf was a member) and many of the publications appeared in the Society's journal 'Archaelogia'.

The records include:

-press cuttings
-correspondence
-manuscript drafts
-manuscript research notes
-sketches
-drawings
-tracings
-printed material (proofs, leaflets, exhibitions catalogues etc.)

Some of the records in the series were created by Scharf's successor to the post of Gallery Director, Lionel Cust. They have been included in the series because they relate to a project started and completed mainly by Scharf, but taken up and finished by Cust after Scharf's death. Relevant records have been bound into volumes. Please see: NPG7/3/3/2

The research papers have been arranged chronologically.
