| Description | Letter and postcard correspondence arranged in two distinct groups: Lucian Freud's childhood correspondence, of approximately fifty items, and Ernst and Lucie Freud correspondence, of approximately 240 items.
Sub-Series LMF/3/1 dates from c1928, during Freud's primary school years when living in Germany, through to 1951, when establishing himself independently, living and working in London and Europe as a dedicated practising artist.
Sub-Series LMF/3/2 covers two broad periods: Ernst and Lucie's courtship in Germany prior to their marriage, from 1919 to 1920; and later during 1930s to 1943, which documents activity of the family as they establish a new life in England. Some letters written by the children are included here also.
The letters are written affectionately, often with humour from the 1930s, and comprise highly detailed accounts of activities and events, as well as describing their emotions and aspirations, as they compensate for prolonged periods living apart. |
