DescriptionKenneth Garlick was an art historian and Keeper of Western Art at the Ashmolean Museum from 1968 to 1984. During the second half of the twentieth century, Garlick carried out major, pioneering scholarship on Sir Thomas Lawrence PRA (1769-1830).

These folders contain collected research relating to Thomas Lawrence's life and works. An overview of the folders and books included in the collection is given here:

- Photocopies of the letters of Thomas Lawrence (1810-1819; mainly to Miss Elizabeth Croft)
- Photocopies of the letters of Thomas Lawrence (1819-1929; mainly to Miss Elizabeth Croft)
- A photocopy of 'Recollections of Sir Thomas Lawrence, PRA, during an intimacy of nearly 30 years' by Elizabeth Croft
- Photocopies of letters between Thomas Lawrence and Elizabeth Croft, and other correspondence, notes and sketches by Lawrence (mainly 1828-1830)

- 3 files labelled 'Lawrence Personal Papers etc.' which include articles about Lawrence, photocopies of Lawrence's letters, papers and professional correspondence between Garlick and other Lawrence researchers.

- 4 files labelled 'Lawrence' which include: professional correspondence between Garlick and other researchers; letters with questions about portraits (similar to the portrait correspondence found at KJG/1/1); research; photocopies of Lawrence's letters to Earl Grey 1803-1813; photocopies and transcriptions of 18-19th century documents and letters to and from Lawrence.

- 5 unlabelled folders which include: correspondence with researchers and research into portraits (especially George IV); reviews and press cuttings from the publication of Garlick's book 'Sir Thomas Lawrence' (Phaidon Press, Oxford, 1989); photocopies and transcriptions of letters from Lawrence; documents relating to Garlick's bequest of his research papers to the National Portrait Gallery Library and Archive; documents relating to the loans of Lawrence paintings owned by Garlick; and Garlick's writing for art museums and catalogues.

- 3 volumes Garlick had bound at an unknown date containing pamphlets, catalogues and press cuttings he had collected on Sir Thomas Lawrence. The publications contained within the volumes cover the dates 1834-1973.
