Extent1 piece (4 pages)
DescriptionTaylor writes that Watts' note was handed to him by a messenger as he was leaving King's Cross on Monday, and without properly reading it, sent it on to Kentish Town so it could be dealt with 'without thoroughly mastering the contents'; Taylor writes that the letter has been forwarded to him in North Berwick; Taylor writes that he is interested in tempera painting and writes 'I have always inclined to take the view that the method of Van Eyck and his school was a peculiarly happy compromise between oil and tempera painting', Taylor adds that he has been reading Ernst Berger's 'Maltechnik' which confirms his view and suggests that Watts read it; Taylor admits that he has given no attention to tempera painting from a practical point of view as he believes the egg vehicle is best used fresh; Taylor writes that he will experiment when back in London and inform Watts of his results; Taylor writes that he was also going to ask Watts if he had thought of using tempera in painting after seeing examples of this method in the New Gallery and at Leighton House by Mrs Herrinham, Joseph Southall Gaskin and others.
