DescriptionIn the letter Laurie writes that he has been experimenting with artists colours with a 'view to enabling them to obtain pure and reliable pigments' and in conducting this experiment has referred to manuscripts of the fourteenth, fifteenth and sixteenth centuries; Laurie writes that he has come to the conclusion that he can 'best serve the artists' by arranging for the preparation and sale of each pigment which he regards as safe as soon as the experiment is completed; Laurie writes that his first pigment which is a strong, pure madder lake, can be obtained from T. H. Lucas at 6 Falcon Yard, Cambridge; Laurie writes that if it is popular he will add fresh colours; Laurie encloses a thin wash of the colour to enable Watts to judge its quality; Laurie also writes that the colour may be obtained from the School and Guild of Handicarft, 34 Commercial Street, Whitechapel, London.
