DescriptionCorrespondence from Scharf relating to professional and personal matters. Many letters include references to portrait identification and works offered to Trustees for acquisition, as well as personal matters including discussion of mutual friends, social events and holidays. Of particular note are the following:

-letter of Jul 1872 wherein Scharf gives his opinion of the completed Albert Memorial, with which Bell had been involved.
-letter dated 13 Oct 1878 wherein Scharf discusses his attendance at the funeral of Sir Francis Grant, and notes the absence of Sir John Everett Millais, 1st Bt and Sir Edward John Poynter, 1st Bt.

Most letters are written on National Portrait Gallery headed paper, with a few exceptions, including three letters written from Blenheim Palace (Jan 1868; Sep 1880 and Jan 1883); two letters written from Knole (Jun and Aug 1872); one letter written from Bayham Abbey (Sep 1880).

Also includes one envelope addressed to Bell at Lower Grosvenor Place, London (Jan 1883).
