A lower sketch depicts a bust of a woman in profile drawn within an oval shape. A sketch to the left of this repeats the shape of the woman very loosely, with broader shoulders.

According to Alex Kidson's catalogue raisonne of Romney's works (2015), the sketch within an oval is thought to depict Viscountess Elizabeth Melbourne in Romney's first society-portrait on an oval canvas.
