Description | Four ink sketches. The top left sketch has been roughly framed by lines and features a seated woman. The top right sketch depicts a woman stood, full-length, leaning her left elbow atop a surface. The head has been drawn in two different positions in this sketch, and foliage is roughly sketched out to the left. The two lower sketches depict the same female figure in a long gown with a high hairstyle in two different seated positions. The lines in these sketches are quite heavy and Romney's layering of line suggests a large volume of drapery.
These sketches are potentially studies for a portrait of Miss Joan Knatchbull, which is referenced in letters/ accounts on Folios 4 verso, 9 and 10 (GRO/2/9, GRO/2/15, GRO/2/16). Although the final portrait features Miss Knatchbull standing in a slightly different position, a similar cut of her dress, extra cloth and high hairstyle are all present in these sketches, and the top right sketch in particular resembles the final composition of the painting.
