Description | Draft of letter written in ink addressed to Sir Edward concerning Mrs Knatchbull’s portrait. Romney is responding to a letter which says the portrait has not arrived. After enquiring, Romney finds the portrait was sent to Canterbury, which is as near Hatch as Faversham, and hopes it will be moved on to Hatch without difficulty. Romney then goes on to address a complaint that Mrs Knatchbull’s acquaintances have observed that the arms of the dress are too large in the portrait. Romney defends this by stating that the proportion will appear correct when the portrait is placed at a proper distance. He also says that ‘whole length Pictures in fancied dress are generally conceived as historical’, and as such it is proper to preserve a historic proportion – as the figure is larger from the hips the arms must be so likewise.
