TitleAccount of all pictures/ Professional Engagements, 1787, pp. 5v-8r
Date1787
LevelSub-File
Extent3 pages
DescriptionPage 6r is titled 'Account of all Pictures sent out and coming in…', however the content listed is similar to that of other pages in this date range which are titled 'Professional Engagements, Pictures what time to be finished..' (subsequent pages are listed simply as 'Professional Engagements'). Entries run from 9 Jan - 31 Dec 1787.

Entries on these pages list sitter names, lengths of portraits, recipient details and addresses, and appear to include a combination of portraits being delivered to their owners and those being loaned to other persons. Transportation details are sometimes included, such as, 'Mr Dashwood picture ¾ to be sent to Charles Dashwood’s Esqr. Sanford near Loughborough Liecestershire by Hazards Nottingham Waggon from the Castle Inn Wood St. Frame by Saunders [sic]', as well as entries noting requests for a speedy completion or requests concerning the portrait, for example, 'The Coppy of Major Congraves Picture to be painted with a Red Coat and Buff waistcoat [sic]'.

From April 1787, entries noting communication with commissioners of portraits are more frequent, such as 'Mrs Russel Desires to be informed two or three Days before her Picture be sent home and to be done as soon as convenient [sic]'. Many such entries request to be informed of Mr Romney’s return to town and some, such as Lady Crawford’s, do not concern specific portraits, but rather request the loan of portraits for her daughters to copy from.

Some entries refer to portraits being sent for conservation, cleaning or being loaned to other users. For example an entry for July 4th reads, 'Henderson's picture came home from Mr. Jones. Mr. Jones got it again July 25th'. Where a portrait is said to have 'come home' this been interpreted to mean Romney’s studio, which appears to have carried out conservation and cleaning work.

Entries are listed for the most part in chronological order per page, although pages 6v and 7r appear have been listed across a spread (page 6v runs from April to October 1787, and page 7r runs from April to July 1787).

Portraits referenced in the Engagements Book have been verified against Alex Kidson's 2015 catalogue raisonne of Romney's paintings, and where possible have been listed below to include full names and correct spelling in square brackets. Duplicate mentions of the same sitter have been removed from the below list, which otherwise appears in original order.
