| Description | The series consists of records created and accumulated by Scharf in the course of the picture research he carried out for the Gallery. The purpose of this work being to enable the Gallery to secure the best and most important portraits for the nation.
Scharf 's research can be divided into the following four activities:
-surveying and sketching portraits in various private and public collections
-tracing portraits
-listing and indexing collections
-identifying and 'authenticating' portraits (confirming sitter identify and provenance)

-indexes to Scharf and Trustees' sketchbooks
-tracings of portraits
-research notes on portraits and collections
-sketches
