Watts writes that he is sending Taylor a tube of the 'Mineral Grey' colour which is too dry to use; Watts requests 'Yellow Ochre' and 'Raw Sienna', both coarsely ground; Watts writes of tempera medium and its use in fresco and large scale painting, describing that he discontinued this practice after finding the oil pigment did not adhere perfectly, but found when painting in Italy that he had no problems, Watts asks Taylor to investigate why this occurred; Watts requests on a very light stretcher, a single primed canvas to join a picture he is painting; Watts writes 'I can't give up the fat and the coarsely ground colours'.
