Watts writes that he has received the white and 'Naples Yellow' colours he requested; Watts writes regarding the preparation of the colours, that they are made to smooth by machinery and the 'hard slippery surface' is wrong; Watts writes that grain and character make the best pictures, 'Reynolds in particular would never be obtained on the ordinary grounds'; Watts requests a canvas prepared with a yellow water colour.
