Welcome to the National Portrait Gallery Archive Catalogue

The National Portrait Gallery Archive holds two categories of record:

  • Gallery Records - those records created by the Gallery itself and identified for permanent preservation because of their ongoing historical and research value
  • Collected Archives - material that has been acquired by the Gallery from external sources because of its relevance to the study of British portraiture

Search the catalogue for archive material held by the Gallery.

Cataloguing of the Gallery’s Records and Collected Archives is on-going: records continue to be added on a regular basis.

Please contact us for details about uncatalogued records.

Archive material is consulted in the Heinz Archive & Library Public Study Room, opening hours are by appointment only Tuesday to Thursday from 10 am to 5pm.

Please contact us to make an appointment, quoting the reference number(s) of the material you would like to view.
